There was a good turnout for the 400m Club Championship on Saturday on a cold overcast day at the Wingham Rifle Range.
Australian representative, Peter Thurtell is showing very good form going into the team’s matches against Great Britain, held at Bisley in England. Bisley is regarded as the premier shooting event in the world, attracting more than one thousand entries for the annual event. Peter is Wingham’s sole representative to England and will be vying for a spot in the Australian team, against Great Britain in the prestigious Australian, the Kolopore and the Mackinnon matches. These matches are shot with 10 person teams over ranges from 300 to 1000 yards with peep sights. This is Peter’s second overseas trip as he represented Australia in 2008 in Raton New Mexico USA.
However Peter’s score of 100-13 was not good enough on the day, with current club champion Wendy Moon scoring 100-14, to top score three weeks in a row.
In the F Class, Chris Burdett was too good on the day winning easily by five points from Phil Costa. In the handicap section Peter Thurtell defeated Wendy and Mike Rogerson who was in third place with only 0.3 of a point difference between first and third.
The club had a visitor on the day 14 year old Murray Forster, whose second stage of 58 was the best F Class score for that stage. Murray’s total score of 108 was an extremely good score for his first attempt at this style of shooting.
Next week will be the 500 yard championship range.
