The Wingham Rifle Club hosted the United States veteran’s team at the Wingham Rifle Range earlier this month.
The US team was here to do some forward scouting for the 2011 Palma World Championships to be held in Brisbane.
The Americans practiced in the morning at 300m, with a teams match at the 600 yard range in the afternoon. Wingham defeated the US by six points and 15 central bulls eyes.
Top scorer for Wingham was Steve Southwell with a 75.10. The ladies auxiliary catered for the day, once again doing a magnificent job.
Local shooter Keith Gleeson and his wife Marianne organised some Australian culture with boomerang throwing and didgeridoo playing.
Two of the club’s juniors, Bronte Thurtell and Bill Blackmore, travelled to Brisbane last week after being selected in the NRAA president’s team to compete in the Australian State teams competition.
Thurtell had an outstanding shoot with a 199 out of 200 on the first day. Blackmore had a number of good ranges throughout the meet.
On the local front, with many members competing in the Brisbane Queens competition, eight marksmen competed in the club championship at the 800 yard range.
In F Class, Chris Burdett had a possible score of 60 in his second stage for a total of 119/200. Phil Costa and Mike Rogerson both scored 113/200 with Mike taking second on a count back.
Bev Rogerson scored a 106 with her new rifle. She is feeling much more comfortable and it is showing in her scores.
In target rifle, juniors Nathan Eagles and Bill Blackmore had good performances. Eagles, who travelled to Brisbane with his brother to compete in a prize shoot last weekend, scored a pair of 49s for a 98.3 while Blackmore, using a borrowed rifle, scored a 100.12.
The club junior component are really excelling and it is exciting to see them doing so well.
Keith Gleeson, also using his new rifle, scored a tidy 48.3 on his second stage for a total of 94.4. Jim Blackmore had a good day scoring 100.15.
The club championship competition will continue next week at the 800m range commencing at 1.30pm.
