Fantastic shooting was seen from Jim Blackmore in B-grade last weekend, shooting 50.8 in his first stage to smash the old Wingham Rifle Club mark of 50.2 from 2002.
This record setter was shot at the 400-metre range with millpond conditions.
Blackmore’s aggregate score of 110.12 broke Brian Mavin’s old record of 99.12 and led to Jim easily taking out the handicap event for the day.
Tony Moon broke his wife Wendy’s old record by one centre bull recording a very solid 100.15.
Bill Blackmore also broke a first stage record like his father in the juniors with a 50.4 surpassing the old mark of 49.6 set by Josh Lee in 2005.
Part time shooter Max Purnell had a very solid performance shooting 98 /100.
In the F-class, Mike Rogerson is improving with every performance, shooting a very credible 110.
Five shooters from the Wingham Rifle Club attended the West Wallsend Open Prize Meeting at the Cessnock Rifle Range last Sunday.
Seventy-one competitors from around New South Wales competed in easy conditions.
Ken Young from the Southern Highlands set a range record shooting with 150/150 and 28 centre bulls out of 30 shots fired.
This was an incredible performance from the veteran shooter.
Tony Moon finished fourth and Wendy Moon fifth, both with perfect scores but she had fewer centre bulls.
Club captain Jim Blackmore finished with 149/150.
Barry White shot consistently to score 148/150 but was unplaced.
Chris Burdett shooting in the F-class was also unplaced with his gear appearing to fail.
The pairs was won by Wendy and Tony Moon with 200.24/200 and the Wingham four-person team tied with Hornsby but were beaten on a countback for first place.
Wingham Rifle Club shooters took part in two big days of shooting in Sydney earlier this month with the State Champion of Champions, the District Rifle association teams and the Country v City matches.
Steve Southwell represented the Mid North Coast and finished sixth with a score of 197/200.
Jim Jeffery from Lyndhurst, representing the central west, top-scored with a 199/200.
Steve won the last range at 800 metres with a brilliant 50.8 (the only possible) but it was not enough to make up the two lost points.
In the under 18s, Wingham’s Bill Blackmore represented the Mid North Coast and was runner-up to Howard Sweegers from Lyndhurst, also from the Central West District.
In the district team’s matches for the State title, the powerful Metropolitan team won the match for the fourth time in a row.
Mid North Coast lost two of their best shooters (Australian reps) at the last moment which promoted two members from the No. 2 team and so on.
They finished a creditable sixth out of the 15 teams.
MNC had the best representation fielding three teams with juniors performing outstandingly well.
The next day, the premier event was the prestigious Country v City match with 15 members shooting for each team.
Country dominated all three divisions with the senior team winning by 11 points and 30 centres.
The Wingham shooters were prominent in the team.
