Young powerhouses show commitment

UNDER EIGHTS

The under eights played Port Breakers at the Wingham Sporting Complex last Saturday.

Considering the recent rain, the field was in good condition – unless you were pushed over the sideline into the mud!

The Tigers played a terrific game of football and their ball passing skills are improving each week.

Try scorers were Nash Atkins, Kurt Fowles and Harry Lewis with two.

Jed Edmonds, in only his second game of footy, has fitted in well and gets involved when he can.

The whole team tackled strongly and made few mistakes for a much improved performance.

UNDER 13s

A fully-committed Wingham Tigers played host to the in-form Port Breakers at the Wingham Sporting Complex on Saturday.

The young Tigers were on the attack from the first whistle with all players making good ground.

Handy breaks from Mitch Collins, Reece Slaven and Alex Blanch helped the Tigers to move forward continually.

Great team work resulted in the zippy Jake Smith scoring out wide to post the only points in the first half.

The state of play continued throughout the second half will excellent defence by Rhyce Kliendienst, Zac Fitzpatrick and Alex Blanch, however midway through the second half the determined Port Breakers side broke through to score under the posts and, with their conversion successful, the Tigers found themselves behind on the scoreboard 4-6.

Knowing a win was within reach, the Tigers immediately stepped up a gear to put pressure on their opposition which caused errors.

Once in Breakers territory, the ball passed through a number of hands before finding Reece Slaven who crossed for a try late in the match which made the final score 8-6.

Teamwork and determination played a big part in the win and all players are to be congratulated on their performance.

UNDER 15s

The Tigers travelled to Jack Neal Oval to take on the defending premiers, the Taree Panthers.

In what was their best performance of the year, the Tigers outplayed the opposition in all areas of the game, running out strong winners by 24 to 14.

With front rowers Blake Smoothy and Jacko Mullen (in his best game for the year) leading the way up front, they made plenty of room for our slick backs to make the line breaks and score some great tries.

Matt Prior, at centre, ended up with three tries in a brilliant display. Fellow classy centre Jacob Lonsdale scored two and Mitch Slaven scored one.

The halves, Mitch Slaven and Scott Williams, led the boys well and Tom Collins, in his first year of league, had a fine game.

Dale Keys and Mitch Barnett had their usual workhorse busy games and Blake Proctor, although ending up a little worse for wear, didn’t shirk his job.

It wasn’t all good news for the Tigers, losing utility player Jacob Lee to a broken collarbone. Jacob Lonsdale took out players’ player.
