The Wingham Tigers have signed up a new face to steer the first grade side during the 2010 Group Three rugby league season.
Kempsey resident Willie Lockwood will coach the Tigers’ top team in what will be his first coaching job.
Lockwood has been a notable player for the Port Macquarie Sharks, Macleay Valley Mustangs and Lower Clarence Magpies in recent years.
He was been an integral part of three Group Two premierships, playing as part of the winning Sharks teams in 1998, 2000 and 2001.
He played for last year’s premiers in Group One, the Lower Clarence Mapgpies, and has competed at representative level for North Coast and Group Two.
Lockwood is usually a five-eighth, but he has played in a number of positions, giving him a versatility and strong understanding of the game.
Wingham Tigers secretary Wayne Goward said Lockwood hopes to build a long-term relationship with the club.
“It’s his first year, so he’s really excited,” Goward said.
“With lots of hard work from himself, the players and the club’s supporters, he believes it will be a successful year for Wingham.”
Lockwood will be out and about meeting the local community tomorrow at the Wingham Christmas Street Carnival, assisting the club with its fundraising.
He will be back in town the following Thursday, December 17, for the Tigers’ first training session and end-of-year barbecue.
Lockwood will continue to live in Kempsey, where he works for the local council.
Lockwood takes over from last year’s captain-coach Nigel Latham, who will stay on as a player.
The reserve grade coach for 2010 will be former first grade utility Ryan McIntosh, taking over from Andrew Cross, and Matt Watson will steer the under 18s for a second year.
The women’s league tag coach is yet to be announced.
