The Wingham Tigers first grade Group Three rugby league side suffered their first defeat of the season after being reduced to 10 players for the majority of their clash with Port City Breakers.
In a game containing some controversial refereeing decisions that earned the ire of the Wingham players and supporters, Port City broke away to score a 60-16 win.
An early try to the home side gave Port City a 6-0 lead.
Five minutes later, a dropped ball by the home team was accidentally kicked into the in-goal area and dived on for another try and a 10-0 lead.
Wingham’s chances of getting back into the match nose-dived when Brenden Summerfield was sin-binned.
In the next few seconds, the Tigers half back and the season’s highest point scorer, Anthony Cowan, was sent off for allegedly kneeing an opponent. With Wingham down to 11 players, the resulting penalty led to another Breakers try and a 16-0 advantage.
A minute later, Mick Hardy was sent off for an alleged spear tackle when he had possession of the ball.
Port City responded with another try to lead 20-0 midway through the first half.
Then against all odds, the Tigers showed their steely determination.
Nigel Latham was denied a try when the referee ruled that he lost the ball in the in-goal area.
A couple of minutes later, with Wingham back to 11 players, Nigel Latham scored in the corner.
Five minutes later, a chip kick from captain coach Willie Lockwood was recovered by Michael Davis who ran away to score. Josh Watson converted the try to bring the deficit back to 20-10.
Joe Southwell was penalised while in possession of the ball. When Southwell argued with the referee, he was sent to the sin-bin, and the Tigers were back down to 10 men.
The penalty led to another Port City try, and the home team went into the break leading 26-10.
In the second half Aaron Green scored in the corner in the fifth minute. Instead of awarding the try, a penalty was given to the Tigers.
From the tap kick, Vince Lockwood barged his way over the line for a try. Michael Davis converted the try to bring the score to 26-16.
With Wingham back to 11 players, Southwell was again penalised while in possession of the ball.
Again the penalty directly led to another Breakers try and a 32-16 lead.
Another penalty against Southwell minutes later saw him sin-binned a second time, and again Wingham were reduced to 10 players.
The Tigers held on tenaciously, but seconds after having 11 back on the field, they were back to 10 men when the referee sin-binned captain coach Willie Lockwood for questioning a decision.
The floodgates then opened against the tiring Tigers who had looked the better team up to this time, despite their numerical disadvantage. Port City ran in five tries in the final 20 minutes to run out 60-16 winners.
The final penalty count was 19-7 against Wingham, a team described by another first grade referee as the most disciplined in the competition.
