THE Wingham Tigers rugby league side rose triumphant from a mud-strewn Wingham Sporting Complex field on Saturday with a 28 to 14 win over the Old Bar Pirates.
The victory was Wingham’s first in three weeks after dual losses to Port City and Taree.
The Pirates were gifted the first try of the match after a couple of soft penalties.
At the quarter hour mark, the Tigers bombed a certain try when Josh Watson had players in support but was tackled by the Old Bar full back.
Ten minutes later, Anthony Cowan scored from dummy half. With his conversion, the Tigers led 6-4.
Just before half time, as the Pirates were attacking, Anthony Cowan fielded a grubber kick and ran 90 metres to score under the posts. With the kick, Wingham had a 12-4 advantage.
In the next set of tackles, Michael Davis made a break down the sideline to give the ball inside to Josh Watson to score. With Anthony Cowan's kick, the Tigers went to the break leading by 18-4.
Inside the first ten minutes of the second stanza, Nathan Davis scored in the canteen corner. Anthony Cowan was successful with his sideline conversion to extend the lead to 24-4.
A couple of minutes later, Nathan Davis dived on a Michael Davis grubber kick to again score in the corner.
This time the sideline kick missed, but Wingham held a comfortable 28-4 lead.
Midway through the half, Old Bar scored in the corner against the run of play. The sideline conversion made the score 28-10.
Five minutes from full time, the visitors scored another try in the corner to trail 28-14.
Although the game never reached any great heights in the muddy conditions, any win over Old Bar is a good win, particularly leading up to the semi-finals.

Big win for reggies
A STRONG first half effort by the Wingham Tigers Reserve Grade team set up a convincing 48-12 win over the Old Bar Pirates.
In a try procession, Mick Hardy, Shane Sweeney, Ryan McIntosh, Adam Kerr and Craig Ryan all scored tries at regular intervals. Luke Steel converted all these tries for a 36-0 lead at the break.
Mitch Trothe scored from a scrum win inside the first ten minutes of the second half, which was again converted by Luke Steel for a 42-0 lead.
The Pirates were awarded a try soon after to trail 42-6. About ten minutes from full time, Luke Steel scored in the corner. His sideline conversion made the score 48-6.
A last minute try to Old Bar made the final score 48-12.

Under 18s beaten in table-topping clash
THE Under 18s game between the Wingham Tigers and Old Bar Pirates was a top of the table clash, the seasiders proving too strong with a 24 to 6 win.
An early try to the visitors gave Old Bar a 6-0 lead.
Wingham’s Mark Fahey crossed out wide after a quarter of an hour. Matt Bridge converted to level the scores at 6-6.
A penalty gifted the Pirates with another try ten minutes before the break and a 12-6 lead.
The second half was also tight. Old Bar scored twice in the final ten minutes to run out 24-6 winners in a game where the score was not an indication of how close the game was.
League tag side defeated
THE Pirates also won the Women's League tag clash by 6 tries to 1 after leading 4-0 at half time. Wingham's try was scored by Shakira Dumas.
