Reggies and under 18s still alive

31 Aug, 2010 01:17 PM
THE Wingham Tigers reserve grade side has advanced to the grand final thanks to a 28-18 win over minor premiers Port City on Saturday evening.

Wingham went into the game at Port Regional Stadium without injured captain-coach Ryan McIntosh. Tries to captain Dave Corbet and Richie Donovan, plus a goal to Adam Kerr, put Wingham ahead 10-6 at halftime.

The lead changed several times in the second stanza. Shaun Carr dived over for Wingham, only for Port to hit back with a try of their own. The Breakers lead 18-16 with five minutes to go.

With the clock ticking down, Daniel Buck put up a high kick in-field which was recovered by Richie Donovan who scored his second try. Kerr added the extra points from in front for Wingham to lead 22-18. In the second last minute of the game, Buck dived over in the corner to put the match to bed.

Under 18s live to fight another day

THE under 18s Tigers successfully navigated their sudden death semi final against the Camden Haven Eagles with a 44-14 result on Sunday.

Tries to Matt Bridge, Nick Beacham and Kurtis Milliken saw the young Tigers go into the break leading 18-4.

Camden Haven started the first half enthusiastically, and were rewarded with two tries in five minutes to reduce the deficit to 18-16.

At the midway point of the second half, Nick Beacham scored his second try, converted by Matt Bridge to make the score 22-14.

This was followed by a try to Paul Orrock, an 80 metre intercept try to Michael Rees, and a try to Jake Manley under the posts to stretch the home side’s lead to 38-14.

Nick Beacham's third try, converted by Trent Grofos, made the final score 44-14.

The score did not indicate how close the game was.

The young Tigers now play Port City Breakers on Sunday at Tuncurry to try to qualify for the grand final against Old Bar Beach.
