Racist remarks tarnish win

06 Jul, 2010 01:33 PM
WINGHAM captain-coach Willie Lockwood apologised to Taree City players at fulltime for comments directed at City’s captain-coach Wise Kativerata during the Group Three Rugby League match at Wingham.

Front rower Joe Southwell called Kativerata, who is from Fiji, a ‘monkey’ and ‘bananas’ during the game, won by Wingham 54-24.

The Taree players were in a huddle on the field after the game when Lockwood approached them.

Southwell was replaced during the second half and took no further part in the proceedings. He apologised to Kativerata at fulltime, saying the comments were made in the heat of the moment. However, Kativerata earlier alleged that Southwell made similar comments during the first round game at Taree.

The Wingham players were involved in a lengthy meeting after the clash in the dressing sheds, where it’s understood Lockwood and president Brenden Summerfield spoke about the incident. Southwell joined the gathering after talking with Kativerata.

Later Lockwood, who is Aboriginal, said that he ‘wasn’t happy’ with the incident.

“The club will deal with it during the week,’’ Lockwood said.

“We’ll go from there.’’

Kativerata is 35 and has been playing rugby league since he was a child. He has also played in the NRL. He said he has never been racially vilified on the field before.

Kativerata has also claimed that Southwell directed racist comments towards him and front rower and fellow Fijian Billy Baleilomaloma in the first round game at Taree.

Wingham secretary Wayne Goward wouldn’t comment on what action the club may take against Southwell.
