The Wingham Tigers under 11s took out the 2009 junior league premiership in a nail-biting finish at Jack Neal Oval, Taree, last Saturday.
From the size of the huge Wingham crowd on the hill, you would have been forgiven for thinking they had at least four teams contesting the finals, but the sea of black and gold was there for just one team only – the under 11s.
The boys started well against the much-fancied minor premiers, Wauchope, which had beaten the Tigers in all three previous matches this year.
Jesse O’Connor scored the only try for the first half.
At half time, Wingham went to the sheds 6-0 up.
Wauchope came out firing in the second half and scored twice to take the lead 12-6.
The game never had a dull moment and the Tigers attack was a pleasure to watch as they constantly hit the line and broke the defence down.
Ben Crowe and Micheal King were menacing up front, making room for the backs to move forward at pace.
Time was running out when Cameron Carey darted across the line from dummy half to score and, with the conversion, tied the game at 12-all.
On the back of some brilliant runs and some Wauchope mistakes, the Tigers had the ball with only seconds left on the clock.
Second rower and captain Josh Atkins was running with the ball when the hooter sounded and pushed his way through heavy defence to plant the ball over the line and win the game by four points.
The crowd were beside themselves as they watched the reserve bench race onto the field and embrace their team mates in celebration.
This was a gutsy win and great year for the boys who have been under new coach Corey Sheehan and assistant coach Scott Murray.
They finished third on the ladder for the season and constantly improved in skill and confidence each week.
Dylan Webster was presented with player of the match with what was his best performance of the year.
Wingham Junior League congratulates Corey, Scott and the team on a well-deserved premiership. The team were also presented with caps for each player and they took out team-of-the-year honours at Wingham’s presentation day.
