Junior footballer meets hero

Jesse O’Connor must be the envy of all his mates at school.

The 11-year-old Wingham boy had the chance to meet his idol, Melbourne Storm fullback Billy Slater, after a game against the Newcastle Knights last week.

The year six Wingham Brush Public School student had the chance to sit and chat with the rugby league star in the dressing sheds – a rare privilege.

“Jesse has idolised him for years,” his mum Tracey Periera said.

“He even follows Queensland in the State of Origin because Billy’s in the team.”

The meeting was a dream come true for the young footy fan.

“He was shocked by how big Billy is,” Tracey said. “He talked about it all the way home.”

Jesse is a member of the under-11 Wingham Tigers junior league squad which plays Old Bar in the semi-final on Saturday.

Jesse, who also plays in the fullback position, scored two tries in the under 11s crushing win over Old Bar the week before last.
