Games few and far between

30 Jun, 2009 12:23 PM
With the course drying out albeit very slowly, some golf has been possible over the past few days. Many thanks must go to the great volunteer workers the Wingham Club has, in particular regulars Ross Dawson Mick Woodward, Rex White, Bob “Chubby” Yarnold and Allan Skinner plus David Andrews and Neville Bell whose expertise in bridge construction has been very useful. These volunteers plus greenkeeper David Henderson have worked tirelessly over the past few wet weeks in order for members to get in a game of golf. Hopefully the sun and wind will continue to do their thing and the remaining wet areas will dry out enabling the full 18 holes to come back in use.

What golf has been played has been pretty interesting. The Thursday ‘chook run’ players managed 10 short holes with secretary-manager Mark Fotheringham the superior golfer with a well compiled 23 points. Closely following was Cory Moore with 22 points, beating Ian Wheeler on a countback.

Saturday was to be the Wingham Flying Fox Pre School Charity Ambrose, but unfortunately had to be postponed a second time due to the wet course. It is hoped to have the event some time later in winter or early spring. Instead a 14 hole stableford was played with 30 players venturing out. Winner of the day was Graham Henwood with the incredible score of 39 pints. Averaging this out it becomes 50 points for 18 holes, not a bad score at all, and well done Graham on your first win. Second place was Geoff Swaffield with 32 points on a countback and equal 3rd/4th was Barry Brown and Brian Roberts both on 32. Gary Croucher got the last prize with 30 points on a countback as well. NTP winner was Barry Brown with a good shot on the 3rd hole.

Pennants continues to be a frustrating victim of the wet courses in the district with a decision on the 2009 LNC pennants to be made this week. At the time of writing, results of the meeting at Laurieton were not known.

Women’s golf has also been affected with the championship postponed to September and pennants called off as well last week. Hopefully this week will see a return to the course for our keen group of women golfers.

This Saturday, the July Taree Motorama Monthly Mug in conjunction with the MRD Electrical Medals and Kangaroofing Long Drives is scheduled over 18 holes. Hopefully the dry weather will continue and even make carts a possibility. Players are requested to ring the club later in the week re the situation with carts.

Finally a big thanks as well to the many loyal supporters and sponsors of Wingham Golf Club who have continued to support the club in these difficult times. Thank you to all.
