The Wingham Tigers first grade rugby league side went down fighting against a strong Port City outfit on the weekend, the Breakers edging a high-scoring affair to win 44-38. The result sees the Tigers drop to third on the competition table.
Port City scored early to lead 6-0.
Then a good left edge play saw Wingham’s Nathan Davis score in the corner to make it 6-4.
After a quarter of an hour, Port City won a scrum feed from a 40-20 kick. A try in the next set from the scrum win gave the Breakers a 12-4 lead.
Midway through the first half, after a break by Wingham’s Anthony Cowan, a chip kick inside saw Michael Davis score under the posts. With Anthony Cowan's conversion, Wingham trailed 12-10.
Port City scored back-to-back tries to lead 22-10.
Just before half time, Matt Halliday caught a Willie Lockwood bomb to score under the posts. Anthony Cowan's kick made the score 22-16.
Just seconds before the siren, the Breakers won a scrum and kicked immediately, resulting in a try under the posts, and a 28-16 half time lead.
Early in the second half, Corey Sheehan regathered a Willie Lockwood bomb to score. As the try was awarded, a brawl broke out on half way. Wingham's captain-coach Willie Lockwood was sin-binned, along with the Breakers halfback. Anthony Cowan eventually converted the try to have the Tigers trailing by just six points.
With Lockwood off the field, Port City scored twice to lead 38-22.
Midway through the stanza, a clever pass from Lockwood put Corey Sheehan in for his second try.
Another Port City try gave them a 44-26 advantage with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Inside the final ten minutes, Willie Lockwood barged over from dummy half on the last play beside the posts. After Anthony Cowan's kick, Port City lead by 44-32.
With time running out, Lockwood kicked from a scrum win. Anthony Cowan regathered to score in the corner. He converted his own try from the sideline for the Tigers to trail by six points.
In the end, it wasn’t enough.
Despite going down 44-38, it was a terrific effort by the Tigers who played their best football in many weeks. With three more rounds before the semi-finals, Wingham now slip to third on the competition table.

Reserve graders register best win of the year
WINGHAM Tigers reserve grade rugby league side handed Port City only their second defeat of the year on the weekend.
Wingham scored first with a try to Richie Roberts, converted by Luke Steel.
Five minutes later, Daniel Buck scored under the posts from a Ryan McIntosh chip kick. Luke Steel had no problems with the conversion for a 12-0 lead.
Port City hit back with three converted tries in ten minutes to lead 18-12 at the break.
Midway through the second half, Brendan Butler scored from dummy half on the last tackle, and Wingham trailed 18-16.
A couple of minutes later, Joel Kliendienst scored out wide to give the Tigers a 20-18 lead.
Ten minutes from full time, Luke Steel scored in the corner.
Wingham were able to hang on to their 24-18 lead and register their best win of the season.
Under 18s bounce back
THE Tigers’ under 18s side returned to their winning ways with a victory over fourth placed Port City on the weekend.
Early tries to Joel Wilson and Matt Bridge gave Wingham an 8-0 lead, before the Breakers scored a converted try.
Tries to Joel Wilson and Trent Grofos, plus another to Port City, made the score 20-12 at half time.
Early second half tries to Sam Power and Matt Bridge, both converted by Matt Bridge, pushed the score out to 32-12. Another try to Sam Power made the score 36-12.
Late tries to Toby Minns, Kurtis Millikan and Paul Orrock pushed the score out to 52-12.
League tag side go down to Port
WINGHAM’S women’s league tag side put in a huge effort, but came up short against a strong Port City side on the weekend.
