Sailing to success

28 Apr, 2009 02:02 PM
There's no rest for Joshua Marks of Elands. While most of his fellow Wingham High School students were enjoying their Easter holidays, he has been competing successfully in major saling competitions throughout the State.

The seventeen-year-old, who has been sailing for the past eight years, competed with Ian Wood, 14, from Chatham High in the New South Wales MG (Manly Graduate) State Championships in Wollongong earlier this month where his crew placed seventh overall and third on handicap.

He backed this performance up by winning his class in the Combined High Schools nationals at Belmont.

Joshua would like to take the sport as far as he could and he plans to work on his higher level skills to get an edge.

“Most boat handling is similar; the higher end of the racing pedigree is about tactics and strategy,” Joshua said.

His sailing career was given a boost earlier this month thanks to a grant from the New South Wales Government.
