Manning angler Russell Babekuhl knows what it takes to catch a nice bream.
The accomplished fisherman has dominated another bream tournament, this time claiming the Atomic Tweed River BREAM Qualifier.
Babekuhl was a convincing winner, his full bag of fish weighing in big, 530g more than his nearest rival.
Winner of the 2008 Taree Super Series on the Manning, Babekuhl used his river knowledge to score his full limit of 10 fish, weighing in 4.25kg.
He travelled to the racks in the Teranora arm of the river, and combined his finely tuned tackle set-up with shrimp spray and pitches close alongside a rack in two feet of water.
Babekuhl let the target sink for 30 seconds and if there was a bream lurking in the muddy water, the hit almost came instantaneously.
“I probably plugged away at the racks for five hours each day,” Babekuhl told the ABT Bream website.
“I would move and throw at mangrove edges to rest the spot for a half hour before returning,” he continued.
The win proved a big pay day for Babekuhl, who netted over $3000 in cash and prizes.
It also keeps him well placed in the season’s standing and number three on 283 points, behind the Queensland duo of Tim Morgan (307) and Nigel Webster on 291 points.
