The weather has played a big part in this week’s golf news with some of the strongest winds seen in the area for quite a long time.
Coupled with the dust from out west, conditions for sport, let alone golf, have been extremely difficult.
The Wednesday veterans staged their annual open day last week and every player deserves a medal for just playing in those conditions. With 75 players, the organisers and the players themselves are to be congratulated on the success of the day. Winner of the open was Peter Tait, showing some good form with 41 points. Congratulations Taity.
Next best was the trio of Graham Troth, Ross Dawson and Alan Weller, all on 39 points. NTP winners were: 3rd/12th, A-grade Syd Gilfillan, B-grade Alwyn Elith, C-grade Alan Ward; 7th/16th, A-grade G Britton, B-grade Merv Philp and C-grade Peter Tait. Straight drive winners were: Ron Irwin for A-grade with a monster hit; B-grade Wayne Bennett; and the straightest of C-graders was John Behn. Long drive winners included Rex White in A-grade, C Pritchard B-grade and C-grade to Peter Cooksey. All in all, a very successful open day and a huge thankyou to Joe Simmons and Lionel Gardiner for their unbelievable effort on the barbecue.
Midweek golf was also an effort with the weather, however Toa Proctor managed a return to the winners circle with 24 points, way too good for the others with Graham Lewis the next best with 19 points. Thursday was a popular win for Peter Fraser with 23, John Hones next with 22 beating George Legge on a countback and fourth to a fresh-looking Tony Lattimore on 21 points. Tony also won the NTP on the third and Terry Grant the seventh.
Last Saturday was the second and final round of the Saxbys Soft Drinks two player aggregate, the winners, the very jubilant pairing of Bob “Chubby” Yarnold and Dennis McKeough on 152 points. Second place was taken by Terry Morris and Wayne Lewis on 148 closely followed by Dave Irvine and Bill Osborne on 147.
The winners were Jamie King with 43 points to take the individual prize, the net winners Chris Kane (A-grade on 36 points), B-grade to Grant Cowie with 42 points and the C-grade net winner was Kevin Morris with 40 points. Runners-up in each grade were Richard Dudgeon (A-grade with 35 points), Larry Thompson (B-grade 41 points) and Dave Irvine (C-grade with 40 points). The best aggregate score on the Saturday was that of Gary Masters and Jamie King on 75 points (well done Jamie).
Despite the horrendous winds the sharpshooters were out and about on Saturday with Damien Keen leading the way with an eagle two on the Plaza Butchers 1st/10th hole to claim 38 golf balls. The NTP on the 3rd/12th was won by a modest Chris Kane; the 4th/13th was not claimed by Graham Henwood and the inaugural Bent on Food voucher on the 9th/18th was won by Barry Brown. No doubt Barry will be taking his bride out for a coffee in the near future. The three winners on the 7th/16th were Richard Dudgeon (A-grade), Terry Morris (B-grade) and Graham Urquhart (C-grade). Neville Webb also had an eagle three on the eighth hole.
This Saturday, the 10th annual Red Cross four-person charity ambrose is on the agenda and a big field is expected to play. Also make sure you have a look at the events coming up in October including the Mug of Mugs, Tiger Pins, the McKeough’s Betta Electrical Cup and the LJ Hooker Cup, all 18-hole stroke events. Lastly, the Wednesday ambrose starts today followed by a sausage sizzle.
