WEDNESDAY veterans had another good roll up this past week with Cec Pedron, Geoff Swaffield and Joe Simmons sharing the spoils all with a net 67.
Great scoring considering the slow greens and the relatively heavy going. Nearest the pin (NTP) winners were Brian Wilson on the 3/12 and Geoff Swaffield on the 7/16.
Sixty-four players greeted the starter Wednesday afternoon in the weekly ambrose with a number of teams producing some great scores.
The best of them was the Brendon Robinson team from Taree with a fine six-under par 30. Second place was the formidable team of Old Tigers led brilliantly by the old firm of Allan Skinner and ‘Chubby’ Yarnold, managing - would you believe - five under par. Third spot went to the Matty Paulson team, also playing good golf. NTPs were won by Russel Grofos on the third and Mark ‘Sleepy’ Thompson took out the Jock Martin Excavations seventh hole.
Thursday’s chook run saw popular life member Rex White win the day, his 21 points beating Ken Squires and Bob Yarnold (both on 20) and followed by Don Gutterson and Mark Fotheringham both recording 19 points.
Apparently Don’s game with Tom Hadwell was controversial. Alleged interference by the green staff put Tom off and Don emerged the winner on the day.
Bad luck Tom. Tom did manage however to win the NTP on the third hole as did Mark Fog on the seventh.
Saturday’s event was the February Taree Motorama Monthly Mug and the winner was new player Ben Heywood, the only player to break net 70 on the day. Congratulations Ben on your first win. Ben also won the MRD Electrical medal in C- grade with Neil Evenden the A-grade net/medal winner as was Mark Fog in B-grade. John Hynes won C grade net.
Scratch winners in each grade were Geoff Blanch A grade, Sandy Dunn B grade, and Rod Brown C grade on the Plaza Butchers 1/10, Chris Kane the Wingham Gourmet Meats 3/12, Rex White won the 4/13 Port hole and Barry Brown won the Bayview Seafoods 7/16 hole. The Bent on Food voucher was won by Tony Henwood with a great shot and the Manning Natural Healing 6/15 also went to Tony.
Kangaroofing Long Drives were also on offer on Saturday with Glenn Thorburn winning A-grade, that man again Tony Henwood B-grade, and new chef Phil Chaney showing his versatility winning C-grade with a big drive.
A big thank you this week to all the volunteers who have helped Hendo with both the greens and the mowing. The course looks magnificent.
This week we have a new event with the first round of the MRD Electrical Summer/Autumn Trophy, played over five stableford rounds, the best four counting.
We thank Michael Dawson for his generous sponsorship of this event, which promises to be very popular, especially with the prize money on offer. Also a reminder to all golfers that the Country Wide Business Solutions/ITP Club Championships commence shortly, round one set down for February 27. Sheets will be out this week so get your name down quick.
Good luck and good golfing.
