Another good week at the dry but beautiful Wingham golf course. A lot of players are obviously after golf clubs for a Christmas present as a larger than usual number of players are looking through the array of clubs currently in the pro-shop. Good luck if you can get them.
Back to the real golf and another good field of Wednesday veterans played a club stroke event this past week and boy were the scores hot. John Behn was the eventual winner with a superb 65 nett. However, he had to work hard for it as he had three other players all within one shot on 66 nett. These were Barry Sky, John Aldous, and Peter Tait with Frank Lawrence next with 67 nett. Nearest-the-pin (NTP) winners were Danny Mills on the 3rd/12th hole and to Bill Osborne on the 7th/16th.
Sixty-five keen ambrose players played Wednesday afternoon in beautiful cool conditions and he winning tee was the Peter Kriss team (finally) after a number of recent minor places. The Schoolies 11 team was next, obviously feeling relaxed with holidays coming up, then Andrew Stone Plumbing third and Chubby Yarnold’s Old Tigers in fourth spot. NTP winners were Ricky Gilbert on the third and Chubby Yarnold on the Jack Martin Excavations sponsored seventh hole.
Mid-week chook runs were again popular with Richard Dudgeon the SMT event winner and club captain Wayne Lewis taking out the Thursday nine holer. Wayne’s 22 points was just good enough to beat his mate Gary Masters on a countback with Graham Steel, Rex White and Cameron Callow next, all on 21 points. NTPs were won by Gary Masters on the third and Tom Hadwell on the seventh. It’s good to see Tom back and hitting at least one good shot.
Saturday members played a single stableford and again the scores were unbelievable. Sandy Dunn won the day with an incredible 46 points, including would you believe 26 points the back nine. Great score Sandy. Next best and winner of C-grade was Kevin Carroll with retired dairy farmer Dave Andrews, A-grade winner with 43 points, B-grade was won by another ‘schoolie’ looking forward to the holidays, Dave Elliott also with 43 points. Runner-up included Chris Kane A-grade with 42 points, Dave Woollard with 41 points and Frank Lawrence C-grade also with 43 points. Hot scoring. The women’s winner was club champion Denise Polley, needless to say
The NTPs were very close. The winners Dave Andrews (the Plaza Butchers 1/10), Denise Polley (the 3/13), Dave Elliott picked up a few new mates after his big win on the 4/13 NTP and Barry Brown is in good with his missus after winning the Bent on Food voucher on the 9/18. The prestigious Bayview Seafoods voucher was won by Bill Millward on the 7/16. Good win Bill. The ball competition went out to 39 points on a countback.
Next week we have the annual Dennis McKeough’s Cake Shop trophy, a much sought-after prize with an individual stableford event. See you there. Good luck and good golfing.
