 Nick’s first major win

Nick’s first major win

22 Dec, 2009 11:50 AM
THAT time of year has very quickly arrived again and if what people say is correct, that time goes quicker as you get older, then I am definitely getting older. This will be the last column for 2009 and I would like to thank all the readers of this column for their nice comments and also a thank you to all the people who have contributed to the golf report through their good golf play and photos.

Our report again starts with the Wednesday veterans who played a 14-hole Christmas dinner event last week. The players obviously were relaxed knowing the handicapper would not be around as the scores for the 14 holer were extraordinary. Winner was Gordon McCluskey, his 39 points too good for Trevor Jones on 38 points and third spot to Cec Pedron who could only manage 36 points.

Nearest-the-pin (NTP) winners were Geoff Swaffield on the third and to Adrian Yeo on the seventh. Have a good holiday vets.

Midweek golf was again popular and the weekly chook run winner was Ken Squires who finally broke through for his first win with 22 points.

Forty players contested the Thursday event and the winner was Terry Wood with 24 points, next came Don Gutterson 23 points beating Damian Keen on a countback, then Graham Lewis on 22, and Jim Bradshaw and Sandy Dunn both with 21. Mark Pedron won the third hole, NTP and Tom Hadwell again won the seventh hole NTP.

Good to see Don Gutterson playing well and beating his mate Tom for a change.

Saturday members played an individual stableford for the McKeough’s Bakery Trophy and the popular winner was young Nick Thompson with 45 well deserved points.

This was Nick’s first major and he lost three shots as well for his efforts. Nett winners were Josh Mawby in A-grade, Simon Crowe B-grade and C-grade to Brad Staff. Josh, on loan from Taree, had a superb round of 69 (three under par) for his 43 points. Congratulations Josh.

Nett runners-up in each grade were Steve O’Donoghue (Taree) A-grade with 40 on a countback, B-grade to Sandy Dunn 38 again on a countback and C-grade to Kevin Carroll with 41 points.

The women’s winner was Lesley Steel with 34 points.

Well done dear.

NTP winners included Larry Thompson on the Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Gary Masters the 3rd/12th, and Josh Mawby the Bent on Food 9th/18th.

The Bayview Seafoods 9th/18th voucher was won this week by Terry Grant who obviously will have a nice feed for Christmas.

The women’s NTP on the 7th/16th was won by Beth Braham who almost had a hole in one, the ball lipping out to finish seven centimetres from the hole.

To finish the year I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very prosperous 2010 and I would also like to thank all our sponsors for their tremendous support and I encourage readers, to in return, support these local businesses. Good luck and good golfing.
