Newcomer wins Pins

20 Oct, 2009 12:37 PM
What a great week for Wingham Golf Club with great weather, great fields and, of course, great scores.

The Wednesday veterans had another good field and played a two-ball event with the combination of Ian Davy and Bill Millward winning the day from Peter Tait and Ross Carroll and the team of Ed Buckingham and Barry Casey. The nearest-the-pin (NTP) winners were Terry Morris on the third and Barry Hodgson on the seventh.

Also on Wednesday, the social ambrose attracted 56 players and the winners were the mixed team of Boys and Girls, captained by Clare Cattell. They returned the impressive score of five under par including an eagle on the very difficult second hold after a 12-metre putt from Lesley Steel. Also returning a 31 was Russell Grofos’s team but they were narrowly beaten on handicap. Third place was taken by the Fuller team, captain Ken also winning the NTP on the seventh.

Thursday’s chook run was also a popular event with Barry Neave proving too good for the rest, his 23 points beating Bill Cooper on a countback. Next came Sandy Dunn (22 points), Mark Pedron (21) and Mick Woodward beating several players on a countback with his 19 points.

NTPs went to Tom Hadwell on the third and to Bill Cooper on the seventh.

Saturday was a tremendous day with 90 players contesting the 2009 Tiger Pins. With two flags on every hole and in extremely difficult positions, scores were remarkably good with newcomer Kevin Morris the winner of the overall nett with 66. Runner-up was Terry Grant playing some good golf for a 68. Overall best scratch score was Rod Brown, his one over par 73 the best ever score so far for the four years Tiger Pins has been running. Next best scratch and runner up was president Neil Moore with a 77, still a very good score. Nett winners in each grade were Rowan Abbott (A-grade 71), Earle Braham (B-grade 70) and C-grade to Jock Martin with a 69 nett.

Scratch winners were Steve O’Donoghue (A-grade 78) and Trevor Jones B-grade with 87; C-grade was won by Col McTaggart with 94 on a countback. The women found the going a little tough but Clare Cattell still managed a score good enough to win from runner-up Joy White.

NTP winners were Peter Cooksey on the Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Mick Woodward the 4th/13th schooner hole and Rod Brown was too good for the rest on the 3rd/12th and the Bent on Food hole, the 9th/18th. The tight pins on the 7th/16th hole proved no trouble for Neil Moore (A-grade), Earle Braham (B-grade) and Trevor Milne (C-grade).

Next Saturday is another very popular event with the McKeough’s Betta Electrical Cup on offer for the 13th consecutive year, and Brad Staff the defending champion. Also on offer is the third round of the Oxley Insurance October trophy and the leader at this early stage is Terry Grant on 137 from three players Col McTaggart, Neil Moore and Jock Martin all on 141.

Good luck and good golfing.
