 Murray's no mug

Murray's no mug

10 Aug, 2010 01:28 PM
WHAT a week for Australian golf with Stuart Appleby becoming the first non-American golfer to break 60 in a professional golf event. Congratulations Stuart.

There was no such scoring in the Wednesday veterans this week however, with most still struggling with the heavy conditions. Also with no carts, golfers have had to walk the course. Life is certainly getting tough these days!

Anyway, back to the golf and only two golfers managed to play to their handicap with retired dairy farmer David Andrews certainly feeling at home in the mud, as he won the day with 38 well-compiled points. Another tough old farmer, Ernie Starling managed 36 points to claim the runner-up prize. Believe it or not, another man of the land Trevor Jones won the nearest the pin (NTP) on the 3rd/12th hole and former ag teacher at Wingham High School, Peter Tait, did likewise on the 7th/16th.

Local farrier and current club champion Rod Brown returned to the winner’s list with a great two-under par round for 22 points on Thursday in the chook run. Rod was kept honest by club captain, Wayne Lewis with 21 points followed by Barry Brown, Dave Irvine and Gary Masters all on 20 points. Dallas Chapman won the NTP on the 3rd as did Dave Irvine on the 7th. The “battle of the sexes” report this week will be a very short one due to the pathetic effort by the male ‘team’. The females won.

Saturday was a beautiful day and a good field played for the Taree Motorama Monthly Mug and a new member Greg Stacey led until the very last group with Murray McCartney in it, came in. Greg’s nett 70 was good enough to win C-grade nett but Murray’s nett 68 won both the Mug and the MRD Electrical C-grade medal. Well done boys. Geoff Blanch also played well to win the A-grade nett and medal as did Ashley Armstrong in B-grade. Scratch winners were Rod Brown in A-grade, Scotty Blanch B-grade and Brian Roberts in C-grade. Ball winners went out to nett 76 on a countback.

NTP winners included Rod Brown (Plaza Butchers) 1st/10th, M Beatty from Sugar Valley won the 3rd/12th, Ben Heywood won the 4th/13th (Port) hole, Gary Masters (Bayview Seafood) 7th/16th hole and Ben Marron won the Bent On Food Voucher on the 9th/18th. You might get a cuppa out of that Paula.

Next week the men play the first round of the 2010 Men’s Foursomes Championships and quite a few names are down already. Again this year there will be three grades with each determined by the combined aggregate handicap of both players, with A-grade 0-25, B-grade 26-37 and C-grade 38 plus. Good luck and good golfing.
