Another interesting week at Wingham Golf Club, and what a relief to see a bit of rain put some greenery back into the place.
The Wednesday vets however, still had the dry conditions and the extra run certainly resulted in a lot of high scores in the single stableford event.
Winner was Peter Tait again, this time beating Ernie Starling on a countback, both with 45 points. Vets captain Graham Troth was next but could only manage 44 points. Great scoring boys.
Nearest-the-pin (NTP) winners were Brian Haynes on the third and Terry Morris on the seventh.
Midweek players had mixed conditions to deal with but the scoring was still extremely high. Richard Dudgeon knocked Toa Proctor off his pedestal to win the SMT chook run with a par round for 24 points. The other great score came from the veteran Syd Gillfillan on Thursday, also with 24 points to win from Rex White (23 points), “Chubby” Yarnold, Tony McMaster and Tom Keech all on 21 points. NTP winners were Ian Scarr on the third and Dave Irvine on the seventh hole.
The Wednesday ambrose started this week with seven teams in action. Already there are some good scores with the winning team of Rod and Reid Brown and Graham and Lesley Steel a fraction of a shot better than the group of Stewart Baker, Russel Grofos and Andrew Cross, despite the latter group shooting seven under par. It was unlucky the handicapper was in the winning group boys. Winner of the NTP was Scott Brown with the cooked chook going to Luke Steel and Wayne McIntosh the bottle of port.
Saturday was the 10th annual Red Cross four-person ambrose and a good field of 80 players resulted in some hot scoring. Best was the mixed team of Glenn Thorburn, Alison Hagney and Taryn and AJ Miller, with the only nett score of the day under 50 nett. However, they only just beat the runners-up Mark Bos, Jason Fowles, Murray McCartney and Michael Couch, the margin less than one shot. Third place was won by Michael and Rachel Bartlet, “Jock” Martin and Russel Grofos. The gross winners were John Hynes, Earl Braham, Syd Gilfillan and Chris Kane, just beating Geoff Blanch, Paul Knapp, Gary and Dianne Morley.
NTP winners included a hole-in-one to AJ Miller on the hard 12th hole, AJ’s second in his golf career. Congratulations Andrew. Other winners were Tony Henwood on the Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Reid Brown on the 4th/13th and Russel Grofos had an eagle to win the Bent on Food voucher on the 9th/18th. The 7th/16th female winner was Clare Cattell and the men’s was John Keen with a great shot. Alison was the winner of the female NTP on the 3rd/12th. A straight drive competition was conducted on the 9th/18th and the two winners were Alison Hagney and Earle Braham. It was a great day and thanks to all the local business houses who donated prizes and of course congratulations to all the Red Cross volunteers who ran the day.
This week is the start of the Oxley Insurance October month of stroke golf trophy, conducted over the next five Saturdays starting with the October Taree Motorama Mug of the year this Saturday. See you all there.
Good luck and good golfing.
