 Jones’ maiden mug

Jones’ maiden mug

12 Jan, 2010 12:05 PM
WELCOME back everyone to the New Year and I hope 2010 is a great year especially golf wise. Since our last report back in December a lot has happened on he beautiful Wingham golf course, the best news definitely the incredible run of rain the local area has had. As a result the course looks magnificent and many thanks to green keeper David Henderson and his helpers, in particular Rex White and Ross Dawson who have been kept busy mowing.

On the golfing side of things the big news was Damian Keen’s 49 points in a stableford event; close to a club record individual score and last Saturday Jason Fowles recorded his first hole in one to officially join the list on the board in the club. Congratulations to both players and to the other winners over the past few weeks.

The first Taree Motorama monthly mug for the year was played last Saturday and the winner of his first major was Michael Jones who managed a superb 67 nett to win the day by four shots from runners up Tony Henwood and his father, an unlucky Trevor Jones. Michael also won the C-grade MRD Electrical medal as did Tony for B-grade. A-grade went to Stewart Baker who no doubt took great delight in accepting his boss’ trophy.

The other nett winner was evergreen Bob ‘Chubby’ Yarnold, his 72 nett too good for the other C-graders. Scratch winners on the day were Geoff Blanch in A-grade, the only player to break 80, B-grade to another old fellow in Graham Troth and to top off a good day for the more mature golfers in the club, C-grade to Ron Wilson with a 96 on countback.

The golf course was obviously the real winner on the day with scores much higher than usual. Nearest the pin (NTP) winners sere Mick Woodward, who with his only good shot of the day, won the Plaza Butchers on the 1/10, Jason Fowles’ ace obviously the winner on the 3/12, Trevor Jones the Bayview Seafoods 7/16 and Dave Irvine hit a beauty to win the Bent on Food voucher on the 9/18. The rest were won by Stewart Baker, the 4/13 pot hole, and the Manning Natural Healing voucher on the 6/15. Only one lady played Saturday so the winner was Denise Polley, her score however beating about a third of the men’s scores.

The Kangaroofing long drive was also on offer with Geoff Blanch (A-grade), Jason Fowles (B-grade) and Ben Heywood (C-grade) the respective winners. A humble ‘Jock’ Martin was however quick to point out to this writer that he out-drove the three of them but was unable to record his name as he won last month.

Midweek gold was again popular with the winners Jamie King (20 points) and Richard Dudgeon (18) taking the money with the SMT competition and Peter Budden too good in the Thursday chook run with 22 points. Other placegetters in the Thursday event were Mark Fog (21), Ken Squires (21), Beth Braham (20), George Foy (20), Dave Rushworth (19) and Syd Gilfillan also with 19 points. NTPs went to Dallas Chapman the third and to John Hones on the seventh. The Wednesday ambrose attracted 52 golfers, the winners were the Steven Foy Hackers team from the Phil Vickers team. Phil’s normal team was unable to play and he was able to take a few visitors into playing and so was finally able to win something. Third place went to the Four Iron restaurant team and the NTP’s to Cameron Cole on the third and the Jock Martin Excavations seventh to Ben Weekes.

Next Saturday is a single stableford for the captain’s trophy with the sheet filling quickly again. The very popular Wally Masters is down for the following Saturday, January 23. Good luck and good golfing.
