Foody blitzes the field

19 Jan, 2010 11:37 AM
WITH things getting back to normal Wingham Veterans got back on the course for the first time this year and Lionel Fell merged the inaugural 2010 winner with a fine 66 nett, streeting the field by five shots. Minor places were filed by Bill Osborne, Geoff Swaffield and Adrian Yeo all on 71 nett. Nearest the pin (NTP) on the 3rd/12th was won by Lionel Fell and the 7th/16th by Bill Osborne.

Wednesday afternoon 54 ambrose players enjoyed the conditions with an all-time record score of 23 odd nett winning the day. The players concerned, Geoff Reading, Harry Ryder, and the Hollis boys from Taree blitzed the opposition with a magnificent six under par, Harry helping immensely with a chip in eagle on the eighth. Well done Old Tigers.

From the mere mortals list of players the best was the Abbot/Foy team to fill second place and the 4 Iron Restaurant team next for third spot. NTP’s went to Craig Schubert on the 3rd and the Jock Martin Excavations hole the 7th, was won by Ben McLeod.

The Thursday chook run attracted another goof field, the winner visitor Peter Budden with 22 points then Mark Fog with 21 beating Ken Squires on a countback. Next came Earle Braham and Greg Foy with 20 points and Dave Rushworth and Syd Gilfillan both on 19 points. NTPs went to Dallas Chapman (3rd) and John Hones (7th).

Despite the indifferent weather Saturday’s captains trophy attracted a good field and the scores were unbelievable. Firstly president Neil Moore came in with a three under par round for 44 points to look the goods only to be knocked off by Greg Foy with his best ever round of 46 points. With only one group to come in Greg was starting to write his victory speech when in came Craig ‘Foody’ Martin with a magnificent 48 individual stableford points, Foody even apologising to Greg upon accepting the trophy from captain Wayne Lewis. Truly unbelievable scores. Other winners on the day were Neil Moore (A grade nett), Greg Foy (B grade nett) and Graham Henwood (C grade nett).

Scratch winners were Geoff Blanch (A grade) with 34, B grade to Franz Schubert on 28 and C grade to Jock Martin with 21 points. Balls went out to 39 points, three ladies played with Denise Polley winning with 37 points. NTP winners were Bob Yarnold on the Plaza Butchers 1/10, Tony Henwood the 3/12, Greg Foy the Bayview Seafoods 7/16 and needless to say got the putt, and Larry Thompson produced the goods to win the Bent on Good voucher for the 9/18. The 4/13 hole was not claimed and so jackpots to six schooners next week.

Next Saturday the annual Wally Masters cross country event is on and a big field is already down for this very popular day. Saturday January 30 is another interesting event with the scheduling of the inaugural Wingham Golf Club Family Championships two person ambrose. Note: any combination of players (family or not) can play on the day.
