 Brown strongest in open

Brown strongest in open

28 Apr, 2009 02:03 PM
Another successful week for Wingham Golf Club after a very mixed weather situation. With the unbelievable rain earlier in the week, fields were down quite a bit with only 22 Wednesday veterans playing a nine hole competition.

The chook runs were much the same with only a handful of players for the weekly event. Winner was the consistent retired dairy farmer, David Andrews, with the meagre total of 17 points, still good enough though to beat everyone else. The Thursday event was dominated by the skins group, Mark Fotheringham the pick of them with a staggering 24 points. Dallas Chapman, despite a fine two under par round, only managed 23 points for second with evergreen Rex White third with an excellent 22 points. Foggy also cleaned up in the Skins department. Great scoring by all.

With the weather improving dramatically later in the week and Hendo and his superb group of volunteers mowing, mowing and mowing, the course really looked a picture for the weekend events, the four person medley ambrose, Saturday and the open day Sunday.

Saturday saw an excellent field of 70 players contest the ambrose, the winners the group of Barry Brown, Trish Van Holf, and Rex and Joy White with a nett 53 and seven eighths. Second group home was the Andrews team comprised of David, Cheryl (captain and boss), Matt and adopted son Tom Hadwell. Possibly the best round of the day came from the third place getters, the team of Mark Fog, Rod Brown, Syd Gilfillen and Earl Braham. This combination had a superb round off 10 under par off the stick, an incredible eight under par the back nine.

NTP winners were 3/12 Bill Millward, 7/16 Rex White (men) and Maitlan Brown (women) and 4/13 to Barry Brown. Long drives winners were Matt Andrews, Dallas Chapman and Syd Gilfillan.

The 74th Wingham Open Day on Sunday was a great success with 77 golfers from eight clubs playing in very trying conditions. A big wrap must go to the Bulahdelah and Gloucester clubs with 22 players representing both these small clubs. A great effort.

The major winner on the day was Wingham’s Rod Brown, winning the open day with a 75 off the stick from runner-up Toby Carroll from Bulahdelah. Overall nett winner was anther visitor, Tony McMaster from Taree, with a fine 84 off a 15 handicap or a 69 nett. Runner up was a very unlucky young Drew Garland from Gloucester, who had a lost ball in his 70 nett.

Other scratch winners, all from Wingham were Neil Moore (A grade), Geoff Swaffield (B grade) and John Hynes (C grade). Grade nett winners included Rhys Christensen (Taree) A grade, Matt Andrews (Wingham) B grade and Tony Henwood (Wingham) C grade. Some additional categories this year included the senior nett (over 50) with Alan Weller’s 71 nett the best and junior nett (under 18) going to another local Mitch Pedron with a 73 nett.

NTPs went to Glenn Thorburn (A grade), Dennis Honnor Bulahdelah (B grade) and no winner C grade on the 3rd/12th holes. On the 7th/16th holes, the winners were Chris Kane (A grade) almost holing out, Wayne Westley Gloucester (B grade), and Cory Moore (C grade). Lucky last on the 4th/13th port hole was won by Brendon Walker with a fine shot to 1.73 metres. Brendon had no trouble finding 12 mates to drink with later in the club.

Long drive winners were Brock Hynes (0-35 years age group), Toby Carroll (36-49 years) and Neil Moore the old fellows winner (over 50 years). It was a great day and presentation back at the club was very much like the old days. Thank you to all for making it such a good day.

A special mention to youngsters Reid and Maitlan Brown who both played in the Sefton Junior Jack Classic on Sydney during the week. A recognised Jack Newton event, Reid won by six shots in his age group and Maitlan by one shot in her division. Congratulations to both players.

An 18-hole stableford event will be played Saturday with the match play championship finals to be played over 36 holes on Sunday in four grades.
