Welcome back to Wingham golf

17 Jan, 2012 11:08 AM
WELCOME back to another New Year and thank you to “Birdie” for her report last week, concise as usual.

Last Saturday an individual stableford resulted in Greg Stacey blitzing the field, his 46 points way too good for the rest. Nett winners in each grade were Richard Dudgeon in A grade with 38 on a countback from retired dairy farmer Dave Andrews. B grade was won by Frank Lawrence on 41 also on a countback from John Keen. Graham Henwood was the C grade winner with 42 from the runner up Terry Thompson on 41. Nearest to pin winners included Jarrod Harris on the Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Damien Keen won the Wingham Remedial Massage 3rd/12th, Alex Wilson the 4th/13th “Schooner” hole and Jason Fowles won the Wingham Pizza and Pasta 6th/15th hole. John Keen completed a good day winning the popular Bayview Seafood’s 7th/16th and Geoff Blanch won the Bent on Food voucher for the 9th/18th. Balls went out to 37 points. Five women played and Jo Stinson showed good form winning from Kath Knapp. Kath’s score of 37 also beat that of her husband, Paul Knapp who only managed 34. Knappy’s indifferent score was probably due to the fact he played with a pink ball. Good to see he is supporting the Jane McGrath Foundation as well.

Wednesday was quite a warm day but that did not stop a good field of golfers both for the Vets and also the ambrose. The Vets was a battle of the farmers with David Homewood outlasting Robert Allan to win the day. Frank Lawrence came in third with 69 Nett. John Wootton won the nearest to pin on the 3rd/12th as did another “farmer” Neville Bell on the 7th/16th. OBE winner was Billy Rice with a fine 73 nett. Wednesday ambrose players enjoyed fine but muggy conditions with Greg Kelly’s “Kelly Gang” winning from the McKeough’s Betta Electrical team with the “Bight Busters” third and “CMC Constructions” fourth. Graham Steel fluked one to win the third nearest to pin, Scott Brown won the cooked chook and Matt Brislane won the port and shared it with everyone in the club. A big thank you to the three school teachers Clare Cattell, Lesley Steel and Dave Irvine for their generous sponsorship of the cooked chook each week.

Thursday chook run was very popular as well this week with some huge scores on display. Would you believe 24 points only managed second spot. Winner, also on 24, was Tony Lattimore beating Alex Kees on a countback. Terry Wood managed third spot with 23, Garry Stackman fourth with Mark Pedron fifth with 22 points. Nearest to pin were won by Tony Lattimore on the third and Daryl Heywood played a great shot on the seventh to win that nearest to pin (and got the putt).

This weekend members and their guests play an individual stableford and a reminder that the “Wally Masters”stableford event is on the following Saturday January 28. Good Luck and good golfing.

Steely
