THE Wingham Tigers’ Reserve Grade team had the opportunity on Sunday afternoon to join the Under 18s in reaching the Group 3 Rugby League Grand Finals.
To do this, they had to overcome the Forster Tuncurry Hawks at Harry Elliott Oval at Tuncurry. The Hawks had beaten Wingham a fortnight earlier in the first week of the semi-finals.
The Tigers played finals football, with Jordan Saunders kicking a penalty goal early for a 2-0 lead.
At the ten minute mark, Adam Kerr ran from dummy half about 15 metres out to score. With Jordan Saunders’ kick, Wingham led 8-0.
Five minutes later, Joel Kleindeinst scored in the corner for a 12-0 advantage.
A mistake from the kick-off gave the Hawks the ball, and they scored off a last tackle bomb in the corner.
Inside the final five minutes of the first half, Adam Kerr scored again from dummy half. With Jordan Saunders conversion, the lead was extended to 18-4.
As the half time siren sounded, Ryan McIntosh scooted down the sideline to score out wide. Jordan Saunders landed the conversion for a 24-4 lead at the break.
Brenden Summerfield scored early in the second stanza near the posts. Jordan Saunders had no difficulty with the kick.
Another try by the home team made the score 30-8 with 25 minutes remaining.
Another penalty goal to Jordan Saunders after 20 minutes made the score 32-8.
This was followed five minutes later with a converted try to Richie Donovan.
When Shane Sweeney scored in the corner with just eight minutes remaining, the Tigers were Grand Final bound leading 42-8.
Two late tries to Forster Tuncurry made the final score 42-18.
