DESPITE some heavy and persistent rain at various times over the past week or so, golfers have still been able to get some holes in.

We start with last Saturday and it was the qualifying round of the Gary Croucher Fencing Knockout. This event has previously been sponsored by Cec Russell and Mid Coast Bearings. Wingham Golf Club would like to thank Cec for his generous support over the past seven years.
This event is played over several weeks in the form of a four ball stableford knockout and teams of two needed to play well this last weekend to qualify. The best team on the day was the father-son combination of Rod and Reid Brown with 46 points. Would you believe they just beat home five other teams, all on 45 points. Of these, the Neville Blanch-Jim Bradshaw combination managed second place with Larry Thompson and Jamie King third. Bad luck to the other three teams who missed out via the countback system. Players are reminded to check whether they qualified for the knockout and to organise their respective games. Good luck to all players and a big thankyou and congratulations to Gary Croucher Fencing for his support of this prestigious event.
NTP winners on Saturday were as competitive as usual and you certainly have to hit it in close to take home the prize. Best of the day was Brian Roberts on the 7th/16th Bayview Seafoods hole. Brian was less than a metre from the hole and actually got the putt. Other winners were Brock Hynes on the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Neville Bell the Wingham Remedial Massage 3rd/12th, Greg Foy won the jackpot on the 4th/13th schooner hole, Rohan Abbott won the Wingham Pizza and Pasta 6th/15th and Terry Morris celebrated a return to Saturday golf winning the Bent on Food voucher for the 9th/18th hole. Balls went out to 43 points.
Wednesday veterans had an abbreviated game during the week due to the heavy rain, but bar profits were up. Terry Thompson was pronounced the winner of the shortened nine hole event with 23 points. This week Vets are reminded that Wednesday is Anzac Day but golf is still on with a Canadaian foursomes scheduled. Some will be in trouble as you will need a partner to play with.
Also affected by rain last week was the Thursday chook run with only a handful of players able to complete their round. Best was midweek specialist Sandy McDunn with a modest 17 points. His playing partner, David McAndrews won the NTP on the 3rd and Syd Gilfillan won the 7th NTP.
This week play is for an 18 hole stroke event and it is also the first round of the Gary Croucher Fencing knockout. Players are also reminded the nine hole charity ambrose in aid of leukaemia victim Emma Jarvie is set down for Sunday May 20. This should be another great day with some spectacular raffle prizes on offer. Speaking of charity ambroses, Wingham Golf Club would like to thank and congratulate the many people who supported the Luke Bailey Charity Day. It was a huge success and the Bailey family were extremely humbled by the support shown to Luke on the day.
Good luck and good golfing to all.
