Mate vs mate on the soccer field

24 Aug, 2010 01:31 PM
WINGHAM Soccer is in good hands with two teams from the under 12s making the semi finals.

Wingham Warriors, one of the leading teams in the comp all year, played the big surprise packet and big improvers of the season Wingham Wanderers. The Wanderers have four under 11s in their team playing up and have more than established respect from their older teammates and opposition.

This weekend both teams played off for a place in the final. The game was played in great spirit, with schoolmate playing schoolmate.

The local derby was a nail bighting game with the Wanderers having early possession. After some good defence by David Gilligan and saves by goalie Noah Palmer, the Warriors made a great attacking play to score 15 minutes into the first half.

The second half saw a turnaround with the underdog Wanderers piling on all the pressure. Shots came from Reid Brown, Jai Harrison, Connor Thorp, Lance Walker and Adam Cheevers, The Warriors' defence held off the numerous attacking raids.

Toby O'Donnell and Cameron Luckie made some great plays when released from defence, their runs bringing the ball right through the middle to show some great footwork. Sarsha Kelly, Zachary Adams, Samuel Hearn and Thea Wespi all had great games. Special mention and congratulations to David Gilligan, Reid, Cameron and Toby for playing up this year on the larger field and displaying skills above their age.

Under 6s

A GREAT team effort from the Sheather Machinery Warriors this week as they came up against the Tinonee Eagles. The match saw some great passing and following through. The team played a strong game and everyone did a great job chasing the ball and marking players. Goals went to Orion Hillenberg, Jackson Smith and Joel Eggins. All players played well and were unlucky to miss out. It was great to be outside on such a lovely day.

Under 8s

EVERYONE played well in the Wingham Signs Wanderers game against Tinonee Eagles on Saturday. Jack Kelly deserved his player of the match award for his strong defence and his runs forward, while Emily Madden again was unlucky to miss out as she supported well and made some good passes.

Her friend, Claire Chapman, was outstanding again with her positional play, not to be outdone by Ben Butler-Kwa who also was everywhere in attack and defence. Jacob Jones bagged the first goal of his career following some good lead-up work from Jordan Darby who ran hard all day. They were supported well by Keegan Hughes who has shaken off his motor bike injury to find his form again. Nathan Smith was brave in defence. There's not much of him but that doesn't stop him from getting dirty, while his brother Aaron, although suffering from injury, tried hard and did not let his team mates down. Well done kids. The pleasure was all ours.
