WINGHAM’S A-grade cricket side have claimed the Johnny Martin Cup with a six-wicket win over Cundletown in the weekend’s final. A five-wicket haul to Trevor Bailey and a game high 44 from young gun Nick Delaney helped to secure Wingham the one-day premiership.
Cundletown batted first with Daniel Stone and Josh Ferris getting the home side off to a good start, the pair putting on 46 for the opening partnership before Ferris was caught by Ben Cole off Bailey for 26. In his following over, Bailey had Stone caught behind for 17 with the score on 53. Bailey picked up a wicket in each of his next two overs leaving Cundletown’s innings teetering at four for 83. In the 17th over, Michael Stinson had in-form batsman Ricky Campbell caught by Jamie Hartland for just 6.
Wayne Smoothy introduced Brad Staff into the Wingham attack after the drinks break with Staff picking up the wicket of Greg Stewart for three and when Russell Laing had Michael Couch caught by Ross McRoberts for four, Cundletown were in all sorts of trouble at 7/94.
Staff had Scott Saunders caught by Laing for one in his third over.
Bailey notched up his fifth wicket for the match when he removed Kel McInnes for 10. In just the 34th over, Michael Rees finished off the Cundletown innings at 117 when he bowled Jaime Waugh for 11.
Wingham’s run chase got off to a poor start when Michael Couch had Brad Staff caught behind by Ricky Campbell with his very first ball. Ben Cole and Nick Delaney pushed the Wingham total to 40 before Cole was adjudged LBW off Scott Saunders for 12. Michael Rees was bowled by Saunders for 7 and Delaney and Stinson pushed the Wingham total to 77 before Delaney was caught for 44 off the bowling of Michael Couch.
Stinson, along with Jaime Hartland got Wingham over the line in the 30th over with Stinson (19) and Hartland (15) handing Wingham a memorable six-wicket victory.
