Junior cricketers put in a strong show

Under 10’s

WINGHAM had a convincing victory over Hallidays Point last Saturday to round off the season proper before semis begin this weekend.

The boys did exactly as the coach requested,and protected their wicket sensationally in bat, conceding only two outs for the innings. Nash Atkins had his best day of 2010 with 11 off the bat to top score. He also hit the stumps while fielding for a great runout!

Hudson Summerfeild and Craig Watson also had good a good day with the bat hitting 10 and 9 respectively.

Taj Greaves made 8 with all other players contributing some runs to the overall total of 51 from the bat,and only two outs making this game one of their strongest performances to date.

The fielding was no different, and enthusiasm showed in all the efforts of the bowlers. Seven wickets were taken by the boys, with hearty celebrations taking place after each one. Summy took two awesome catches and a wicket. Tyler Webb took 2 for 4, Josh Mctaggart 1 for 6, and Hudson Bird also 1 for 6.

Under 12 Raiders

WINGHAM (183) recorded an outright win over Hallidays Point (76 and 35)

Bowling highlights: 1st innings M Niven 2/3, R Morris 2/6, J M Saxby 1/9 and C Armstrong 1/10. A great catch was taken by to Ben Crowe to dismiss the only Hallidays Point batsman to get runs (20).

Batting highlights: M Niven and B Rose-Brislane got the boys off to a great start in scoring 62 runs off the first 10 overs. Mitchell was out for a good 44, including seven boundaries. The runs flowed with all players contributing to the side. Archie Robertson made a solid 9, Jordan Morgan-Saxby had a great knock with 10 runs, Ryan Morris 24 and Michael King not out 19.

Going for outright points to make the semi finals, the boys bowled aggressively and straight to have Hallidays Point 5 for 1 and then 6 for 2. Blake Rose-Brislane and Michael King opened the bowling and dismissed 6 batters for only 5 runs. Corey Armstrong chipped in with a 2/6 and Jordan Morgan-Saxby 1/10 to dismiss Hallidays Point for 35 runs, only 17 of which were off the bat.

What a great bowling display as all wickets were bowled. The team, consisting of nine boys now will be all fired up for the semi-finals on Saturday.They have been a credit to themselves and keep improving every week.

Under 12 Tigers

WINGHAM concluded their match against Great Lakes Blue on the weekend with an easy victory.

Wingham batted first and scored 142 on a very slow outfield. Reid Brown made 40, Jessie Newman made 45 not out.

Wingham then carried their form into the field to have Great Lakes all out for 101. Best of the bowlers were Billy Bartlett 3/5 and Reid Brown 3/8.

Wingham went for an outright win and took 7 wickets for 43 in the second innings. Brock Strathdee took 3/2. Other wicket takers were Josh Essery 1/1, Tyrone Goodman 1/10 and Shane Manny 1/4.

Under 16s

WINGHAM completed a comprehensive performance to take first innings points, scoring 318 runs and bundling Taree West out for 139. This result will see Wingham leapfrog Old Bar and finish in second position, leading into the semi-finals.

The ‘spin twins’ of Scott Williams (3 for 12) and Ryan Relf (3 for 37) caused havoc in the Taree West batting ranks, with tight opening spells from James Orrock 1 for 12 (7 overs) and Toby Minns 1 for 12 (6 overs), setting the example for all bowlers who followed. Geordan Smith took 1 for 2 (3 overs) and Tyler Atkins 1 for 13 from 5 overs.

A sharp team catching effort resulted in eight catches being taken – Mitch Barnett three, Jackson Mullen two, Julian Walker one, Aaron Becroft one and Toby Minns one.
