A-grade into final

16 Mar, 2010 12:36 PM
A RAIN-marred draw between Wingham and Taree West A-grade cricket sides has seen Wingham move through to the final against Taree Leagues.

The winner of this weekend’s game will play minor premiers Cundletown in the grand final.

In a rain-affected match, Wingham won the toss and sent West into bat.

Youngster Jamie Hartland gave Wingham the ideal start when he removed Paul Cox and Josh Robards in the second over, both for ducks.

Corey Shields and Jeremy Dack then put on 60 runs for the third wicket before North Coast representative bowler Dave Rees struck a double blow. Rees had Shields caught behind by Ben Cole for 28 and then removed Dack for 26.

Peter Crossman joined Lee Crozier at the crease and the pair moved the West total along before Crossman was trapped in front for 5 off the bowling of Mick Stinson.

With the loss of their 5th wicket, Taree West declared their innings on 83, needing 10 wickets in 23 over to win the match.

Wingham had some nervous moments early on in their dig, with Shields removing teenagers Nick Delaney and Michael Rees cheaply.

When Brian Levi bowled Brad Staff for 2, Wingham were struggling at 3 for 16.

Ben Cole made 6 before Shields had the number four bat adjudged LBW with the score on 24.

A 45-run partnership between Jamie Hartland and Mick Stinson steadied the ship for Wingham but with the score on 69, Hartland was caught behind for 14.

It was left to Stinson and Wayne Smoothy to see the final overs, with Stinson remaining 33 not out and Wingham on 77.

The draw means Wingham moves through to next week’s final to meet Taree Leagues after Leagues lost their major semi final match to minor premiers Cundletown.

Constant rain meant there was no play in the major semi until 1.15 on Sunday. Cundle captain Anthony Turner won the toss and sent Leagues into bat. Leagues declared on 93, giving themselves two hours to try and bowl Cundle out.

Cundle openers Anthony Stone and Josh Ferris gave the innings a good start in the run chase, adding 45 before Stone was out for 21 off Reece Whitton's bowling. Cundle overhauled the score in the 19th over with four down. Ferris continued his bright form to remain 58 not out.
