Tigers rally for top season

25 Jan, 2012 05:12 PM
WINGHAM Junior Rugby League is gearing up for a big season ahead and is rallying the troops to join teams for the 2012 season.

Wingham Tigers junior football was fortunate to receive a $2000 grant from the Newcastle Knights NRL Club to go toward the new season. The NRL club was interested in investing money to develop players in junior rugby league teams and was happy to contribute to the Wingham Tigers. Thanks to this grant, each member who signs on in 2012 from ages six to16 will receive a special Wingham Tigers football.

“The grant is very good and a big thing for the club,” secretary, Helen Cross said.

The junior football club is also excited to announce two new major sponsors of the under 16s team. Pottsey’s Bakery and Blues Excavation have both put their hands up to sponsor the jumpers for the team. At the end of the season, the under 16s jumpers are given to the players as a farewell present as they move on from junior rugby league into under 18s football.

Cameron Potts from Pottsy’s Bakery is pleased to sponsor the team as junior rugby league has supported the bakery in previous years.

“I like looking after the juniors, it’s good to see them come through and to move onto bigger and better things,” Cameron said.

“I think if you show support for the local community they will support you, I wouldn’t have a business if it wasn’t for locals,” he said.

The off season has been busy for the club with a range of upgrading work undertaken and volunteer events attended. Upgrading works have been completed on the mini field at the Wingham Sporting Complex ensuring the field will be in better tread during wet weather.

A new shade shelter has also been erected at the sporting complex benefiting not only junior rugby league but a range of other sports played at the grounds.

Players and parents will also be more informed during weekend games with a new PA system secured for the club.

The junior rugby league club did its bit for the community, providing a fully manned, volunteer canteen at the Relay for Life weekend held at the Wingham Sporting Complex in mid November.

“This year we have a highly motivated committee with a huge focus on community spirit,” Helen said.

A special registration afternoon will be held on Tuesday February 7 at the Wingham Sporting Complex and will host a special guest from the Sydney Roosters NRL football club. Following registration afternoons will be held at Central Park at the log February 9, 14 and 16.
