Wingham can lay claim to another national superstar – jockey Corey Brown, who raced to victory in the Melbourne Cup last week riding Shocking.
Brown was born to Jack and Dixie Brown at Manning Hospital, Taree, and grew up in Wingham, attending Wingham Brush Public School and then Wingham High.
Last Tuesday’s win was especially sweet because he just missed out on the Cup last year.
“When Shocking crossed the line and the Melbourne Cup was ours, I was in a daze,” Brown wrote in The Daily Telegraph last Wednesday.
“This is what you dream about as a jockey. Since I was a little boy growing up in Wingham, I’ve imagined what it would be like winning the Melbourne Cup.”
Brown followed up his Cup win by scoring an unprecedented triple crown in the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Before the Cup win, he took the Victoria Derby on Monaco Counsel; later, he guided outsider All American to victory in the $1 million Emirates Stakes.
This amounted to a week’s wage of $250,000.
Taree-Wingham Race Club hopes Brown will be able to attend the Wingham Cup on Sunday, November 22, where the club plans to honour his amazing performance.
Brown and his wife Kylie are parents to three daughters, Charli, Maddy and Holli.
His parents now live on the Gold Coast but his grandmother still lives in Wingham.
