THE Wingham RSL sub-Branch is ready to honour the men and women who did their bit to defend our country during World War II.
Local veterans, school students and members of the community are invited to the sub-Branch’s inaugural Battle for Australia commemorative luncheon at the Wingham Services Club on Friday September 3.
Guests of honour on the day will be our World War II veterans.
The term ‘Battle for Australia’ was first used by Australia's wartime Prime Minister John Curtin to describe the impending massive struggle to defend Australia against Japanese military aggression.
Battle for Australia Day is now recognised on the first Wednesday in September.
Wingham RSL sub-Branch secretary Ron Irwin said local celebrations have been in the works for several months, with the September 3 celebration to have a strong community focus.
“The lunch is going to have the feel of a reunion more than anything,” Mr Irwin said. “The atmosphere will be meaningful and relaxed. It is a chance for veterans, community members and schools students to learn something from one another.”
Cost for the luncheon is $20 per head. You can contact Ron Irwin on 6553 4594 to book your place at the event.
