WINGHAM High School is on its way to repeating last year’s Science and Engineering success with victory in the Mid Coast Challenge held last week.
Wingham High scored first place at the Taree Racecourse through the combined effort of eight teams of year 10 and 11 students.
Other schools to take part included Taree High, Chatham, Gloucester, Manning Valley Anglican College, Great Lakes College and Taree Christian College.
Run by the University of Newcastle and Rotary, the challenge has been developed to introduce students to the world of science and engineering and to promote career options in those fields.
Students are tasked with a number of science and engineering-based challenges, including designing an eco house, building a working robot, constructing a miniature hovercraft and designing a load-bearing bridge out of limited resources.
Wingham High’s team is driven by teacher Mary Doust, with support from teachers Paul Watts and Graeme Taylor on the day of the competition.
Wingham students will now head to Newcastle in August to compete in the Science and Engineering Super Challenge, with the chance to qualify for the national finals in Victoria in October.
Wingham High School came 14th overall at the national Science and Engineering Championships last year.
