WINGHAM High School students have again proven their scientific prowess, taking out this year’s High School’s Science and Engineering Super Challenge in Newcastle.
After coming second at the Mid North Coast event in Taree in May, the team fought hard to redeem themselves and will now head to the National Challenge at Gosford in October.
The national challenge will see the winners from all state super challenges progress and includes schools from as far away as Darwin and Perth.
During the super challenge, Wingham’s school team had to split into groups to tackle different tasks and experiments, earning points per placing at each event.
The main challenge of the day was the ‘Bridge Challenge’, where students were required to build a bridge, out of materials supplied to them, that was both light and strong.
They also won three other events, leaving it impossible for any other school to earn enough points to win.
The school is extremely proud of the students who conducted themselves maturely and professionally.
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a joint initiative between the Rotary Club, MidCoast Water and Newcastle University, and aims to excite students about the wonders of science and engineering.
The students agreed that you don’t have to have the most scientifically intelligent team, but you have to be able to work together, with teamwork the key to their success.
The students are excited for their next challenge and will head to Gosford on October 19, where they’re quietly confident of a win.
