Plans underway to pay tribute to unsung heroes

30 Jun, 2009 12:05 PM
Planning is underway for a full day’s celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of the Wingham RSL Women’s Auxiliary.

The very first auxiliary meeting was held on a Wednesday in July 1929 and the anniversary celebrations will take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2009.

The event will begin at 10.30am with a commemorative tree planting at the Wingham Town Hall.

This will be followed by a concert and luncheon in the Wingham Services Club auditorium at 11.30am.

The concert is sure to be the day’s highlight with the performance taking on a Broadway theme.

Killabakh identity George Hoad will be master of ceremonies for the event and he will be joined in song by Kylie Nelson with accompaniment by Sydney pianist Barrie McMahon.

The musical program will be a selection of songs from the golden age of Broadway with an opportunity for audience members to sing along towards the end of the afternoon.

“We’re working hard to make this an event that will not be forgotten,” organiser Mave Richardson said.

“We’re also very appreciative of the support and cooperation of the Wingham Services Club staff.”

Cr Richardson said the idea behind the events was to show gratitude to these women who are often the ones working behind the scenes with little acknowledgement.

“This time it’s their turn,” she said. “We’re going to wait on and look after them.”

Invites for the event have been sent out to special guests, Wingham RSL sub-branch members and, of course, current and former members of the Wingham RSL Women’s Auxiliary.

The entire community is invited to join in the celebrations.

Tickets are available now from the club in Bent Street at a cost of $18 per head.

Please book by July 22.

Phone the club on 6553 4577 for more information.

The auxiliary has a very proud history, much of which can be found in the minutes of meetings held long ago.

Cr Richardson is also hoping to hear from anyone who has photographs or other memorabilia that can be displayed on the day and perhaps be included in a short history of the auxiliary and its many achievements.
