Our fallen remembered

The courage and larrikin spirit of the Australian soldier was recognised last Wednesday at Wingham’s Remembrance Day ceremony.

A small but reverent congregation met in the foyer of Wingham Town Hall to mark the 91st anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which brought about an end to World War I.

The president of the Wingham Returned and Services League Sub-branch, Allen Valentine, led the service and he reminded the audience that the scars of The Great War were many.

“The unforseen wounds – that of the mental scaring that those men brought home. The family bore the brunt of that war,” he said.

Wingham High School captain Dean Whitlam offered a young person’s perspective on the meaning of Remembrance Day.

In his heartfelt address, he said World War I was important because it was a defining moment in Australia’s history.

“This war is thought by many to be the moment when Australia was recognised as a nation,” he said.

Dean said Australian soldiers were renowned for their larrikinism and Mr Valentine agreed that their sense of humour was one of their most important traits.

Other addresses were delivered by the Wingham RSL chaplain, Reverend Barry Prinable, and a member of the Krambach chapter of the Wingham RSL, Del Heuke.
