WINGHAM Public School is set to extend its focus on healthy lifestyle habits thanks to a sizeable grant from the federal government.

The school will receive $61,810 under the Healthy Active Australia Community and Schools grants program.

The grant will be put towards teacher education, daily physical activity for the students, a nutrition program and the Olympics Gala Day, which has been rescheduled for later in the year.

The grant will also see the installation of a fitness circuit, which will encourage the students to engage in daily exercise.

Principal Lyn Davis said the fitness circuit is likely to be built behind the school demountables.

The extra training will educate staff on how to teach children to throw a ball, jump, catch and kick a ball correctly.

The school will be able to progress with the project once administrative arrangements have been made with the government, Ms Davis said.

WPS first applied for the funding in June, 2007.

Ms Davis said the school was very excited to receive the funding.

The funding complements the school’s existing focus on healthy activity which has included all students participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge and a healthy canteen.
