Creek project on the countdown

07 Oct, 2008 10:53 AM
Manning Landcare’s works on Cedar Party Creek are in their third and final year.

Bush regenerators and volunteers have been busy planting new trees in areas that have previously been weeded.

Over the duration of the project, 1600 plants have found a new home on the banks of the creek.

The aim is for these new plants to help stabilise the banks, create a canopy to shade out weed species and establish a riparian (riverside) zone of native trees.

Volunteers have been very generous with their time, providing valuable assistance to the bush regenerators.

This enables the project works to cover more area in the given time.

The volunteers find the work very satisfying and pick up skills on the way.

The hands-on aspect of the project provides an ideal platform to learn tree and weed identification.

“For the project to be a long term success, we will need some volunteer commitment to help maintain the works,” Alison Allan from Manning Landcare said.

“It is important for the health of the Wingham community that we aim to keep the privet in check.”

Manning Landcare envisages that one day of maintenance per month would eliminate any weed seedlings that try to poke their heads up.

The group encourages anyone interested in assisting with project to drop into the Landcare office in Isabella Street on Mondays or Wednesdays or call 6557 0244.

Funds for the project are provided by the NSW Environmental Trust.
