Commonwealth coup for Wingham Bowling Club

Commonwealth coup for Wingham Bowling Club

17 Aug, 2010 01:47 PM
THE Australian lawn bowls team will have a final preparation on the greens at the Wingham Bowling lub before heading to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games next month.

Both the Australian men's and women's sides will play a series of matches on Monday September 13.

This will be the last time they'll be together before they head to India.

This is a massive coup for the Wingham club, with officials expecting a huge crowd.

"It is a phenomenal result really," club vice president John Black said. "The Australian team is very selective where they play, so for them to come to our small community for a final preparation is fantastic. The standard of bowls will be very high."

Australian coach, Rex Johnston from Forster said he believes the greens at Wingham will provide similar conditions to what the Australians will experience in India.

Johnston, one of the greats of Australian bowls, has played at Wingham since he joined the Tuncurry club three years ago.

A select Manning District team will also have a chance to play against the Games representatives.

"This is a great chance for locals to witness Australia's best bowlers,'' Johnston said.
