The organisers of Wingham Beef Week are forging ahead with plans for the annual festival next May.
The future of the event was thrown into doubt in September when only six people turned up to the annual general meeting.
The meeting was rescheduled for October and, although there was still a small number in attendance, there were enough people to form a new committee for the 2010 event.
Herbert Flemming of Mount George has been named the acting president, replacing Nigel Pereira, and Jenn Gallagher will replace Rebecca Jowett as the secretary.
A treasurer is to be confirmed.
The organisers have also introduced a junior committee for the first time, a group of keen Wingham High School students – Jade Wells, Matt Fawcett, Josh Chrislett and Ben Gallagher.
Jenn said the commitment for the juniors was an encouraging sign.
“They’re our future,” she said. “It’s encouraging youth into the beef industry.”
The committee’s first priority will be to contact agricultural high schools to garner greater support and participation.
Next, organisers will seek sponsorship.
Jenn admitted 2010 would be a “crucial year” for the future of Beef Week.
“We still need the support of the community,” she said.
If you would like to join the committee, phone Jenn on 0438 269 936 or attend the meetings held from 6.30pm on the second Tuesday of the month at the Wingham Showground tea rooms.
