TALENTED artisans and hundreds of craft lovers will flock to Artisans Retreat in Mondrook to experience an expo over three days showcasing the best of arts, crafts and creative talents.
The expo, beginning on Friday and ending Sunday is in its second year at the local cafe and gallery giving visitors the opportunity to see demonstrations by people working with a range of materials including wood, metal, fabric and glass. It’s also a chance to catch up with suppliers and get hands on the latest tools.
Owners of Artisans Retreat and coordinators of the expo Peter and Christine Calabria initially ran the expo last year because the Newcastle wood show was cancelled. They wanted to give people in the Newcastle and local area something to look forward to. Last year had a high emphasis on wood and craft, but this year has expanded to include a range of crafts and skills including jewellery making, antique clock restoration, guitar building and cooking.
The concept of their gallery, cafe and bed and breakfast hatched when Peter started woodturning. They were living in Sydney and were looking for a sea change so the business became a way of escaping the city.
Almost 20 masters of their crafts will converge on Artisans Retreat including Anne Mitchell and her fabulous silk fabric paintings, Alan Williams’ wood designs, Peter Minson’s artistic hand blown glass and blacksmith, Doug Moseley and his creative work with iron. Christine from Artisans Retreat will be running silver, clay and candle making demonstrations with Peter showing off his woodturning skills.
The couple have sourced the very best and most talented artisans through their networks, with many featuring works in their gallery.
Peter encourages people to take the opportunity to speak to leading suppliers of tools, timber, consumables and education.
“Take advantage of expo specials to stock up on equipment and supplies.”
Last year’s two day expo saw 500 people visit Artisans Retreat. Peter and Christine are expecting more than 1000 over the three days with some travelling as far as Victoria. This is sure to have a fantastic flow on to tourism in the area.
“I have already referred visitors to accommodation in the area,” Peter said.
“Those who are really inspired have the opportunity to join a range of workshops in the week following the expo,” Peter explained.
There are no set times at the expo with a variety of demonstrations and exhibits taking place constantly. Entry is free with lucky door prizes running throughout the weekend.
