RECORD numbers of entries. Huge crowds. A merciful spell of weather.
It was these ingredients, mixed with the enthusiasm of an entire community, that made the 125th Wingham Show a burgeoning success.
It was wet underfoot, but that didn’t stop families pouring into the historic Wingham Showground last Saturday and Sunday for a range of artistic and animalistic displays.
“It looked as though it was going to pour down on Saturday,” Show secretary Anne Thorburn said. “But I think in the end we were pretty lucky with the weather. We were incredibly happy with how the weekend turned out.”
Ms Thorburn reported a massive spike in the number of entries in the art, craft and cooking sections. There were apparently 370 individual artworks this year. All horse and livestock events enjoyed strong support, as did Sunday’s demolition derby, with eight cars taking part.
Special guests on the Saturday included Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott, State member John Turner and Greater Taree City mayor Paul Hogan. All three watched on as Wingham Show life member, Ruth Rankin, delivered the official opening.
The Wingham Chronicle will be publishing the results of various sections of the show over the coming weeks. Keep your eyes peeled.
